on nbc's meet the press president obama said the endless wrangling was not the democrat's fault. >> we have been talking to the republicans ever since the election was over. they have had trouble saying yes to a number of repeated offers. >> at midday democrats suddenly declared that one element of the republican offer was a deal breaker. a proposal to change the way social security benefits are calculated that would lead to smaller checks for many. >> we're not going to have any social security cuts at this stage. that just doesn't seem appropriate. >> so republicans quickly dropped that proposal and insisted the two sides were closer than they seemed. >> so hopefully the discussions between the vice president and senator mcconnell will get us back on track. >> reporter: this evening leader reid announced there would be no vote tonight and that the senate would reconvene tomorrow morning. at this point both the house and the sflat would feed to vote on a plan tomorrow to give the president something to sign before the deadline. nancy cordes, cbs news on capitol hill. >> jeff: the pres

and they are not doing it. >> tomorrow morning, president obama will be david gregory's guest on "meet the press". you can catch his interview on 11 news at 10:00 a.m. now to today's storm, the third we saw this week. while there was snow and frederick and carroll counties, many folks might call this the good kind of snowstorm, the kind that covered the ground just enough for kids to sled and melt by the end of the day. dropping termperatures combined with a damp paper and could make for icy spots on the road. but how much good news for as translated into bad news up north. >> it is interesting what happens today. we had one area of low pressure coming from ohio earlier today. that one fell apart and transferred its energy to a coastal low. it delayed the snow until 10:00 a.m. but the storm turned into a big nor'easter up in the northeast part of the country, producing 10 inches of snow around boston and into connecticut. on the back side of that storm, it will turn windy and cold. we will check the 7 day when i come back. >> thank you. now to pictures of the big nor'easter as it moved quickly today,

of perspective right now. just this morning on "meet the press," president obama essentially was blaming republicans for the inability to move anything and speaker boehner, a couple hours later took to twitter to blame the president for not urging the senate to pass a bill that the house passed, but that bill wouldn't pass the democratic led senate anyway. when the two lead negotiators in the whole process, speaker boehner and president obama with two days to go are still in blame game mode, we are very unlikely to get something done in the last 48 hours. >> jimmy, let me bring you in on the next topic. robert hinted at it. this should be a win. it should be about the american people getting a win here. winners andlosers. it is politics. what about the president here? is he going to have a tough sengd term if he has to take this same battle into next year and be dealing with this. he talked this morning he wanted to take on immigration control and gun control and energy. those things can't get done if he has to go into this major battle again. >> i like looking back at when bill clinton

's the amount coming in. i want to ask but this, second term, because president obama yesterday on "meet the press" was asked about this question, what does he think his top priority is for his second term? and he said immigration reform is his top priority. listen. >> so what is your single priority of the second term? what is the equivalent to health care? >> well, there are a couple of things that we need to get done. i've said that fixing our broken immigration system is a top priority. i will introduce legislation in the first year to get that done. i think we have talked about it long enough. >> clayton: obviously a huge thing that needs to get done. should that be his top priority? what about jobs. >> juliet: a top priority. >> he didn't really say that. he said it was a priority. >> clayton: he said that before he got elected the first time. >> right. and it is a top priority. and the republicans ought to take the lead. they have to get smart. they can not have what happened to them with immigration and other issues sabotage their elections. you look at what's going on and frankl

for taxes to go up, and unfortunately that just didn't happen. >> okay. maria, president obama making his first sunday san mateo appearance -- sunday show appearance tomorrow on "meet the press." a recent poll shows that more american will hold congressional republicans responsible for going over the fiscal cliff instead of the president. 48%-37% there. has making his case to the public either on recent trips or with his upcoming appearance, has that really given president obama the leverage in this debate? >> i certainly think it has helped because what this president has been good at i think throughout his tenure through the white house and definitely through the campaign is making the issues that he is fighting for and that he has been talking about relevant to everyday americans. and he has been asking for those same americans to make their voices heard with their congressional leaders. and as we all know, there is no one more important to congressional leaders than their own constituents back home. and so when the president asked constituents to let congressional leaders know what it
